The Four-Role Architecture: How MYKO Formulas Are Built

Most supplements load a hero ingredient and hope absorption takes care of itself. MYKO is built on four roles — chosen the way an engineer chooses parts, not the way a marketer chooses a headline.

If you've read more than one piece in the Library, you've seen the same four words appear: signal · growth · fuel · delivery. They are the architecture every active MYKO formula is built on, and they are the reason the bottles look the way they look.

This piece is the explainer. Once you understand the four roles, the rest of the system — why some formulas are protocol-use and others are daily, why Shilajit appears in every product, why niacin is a back-label companion recommendation rather than an ingredient — reads like a single coherent argument instead of a list of design choices.

Why "architecture" instead of "ingredients"

The category default is to design a supplement around a hero compound. Lion's Mane for cognition, Ashwagandha for stress, Reishi for sleep. You name the hero, dose it, surround it with a few supporting ingredients in undisclosed amounts, and let the species' reputation do the marketing.

That works fine for marketing. It works less well for the body.

The body doesn't process a supplement the way a label organizes it. It runs a coordinated system: a signal asking for change, structural inputs the change can land on, the energy to do the work, and a delivery layer that gets compounds where they need to go. Skip any one of those four and the system underperforms — not because the hero is weak, but because the circuit around it is incomplete.

MYKO is built from that observation. Four roles, every active formula, every time.

The four roles

Each role is held by one ingredient, chosen for what it does in the system rather than what it carries on its own.

Signal — the Active Botanical

Listed on every active MYKO label as Active Botanical — 100 mg. We refer to it that way for compliance reasons; specifics are detailed in the documentation included with your product.

Functionally, this is the signal layer of the formula. At a sub-perceptual dose, it is included to support pathways associated with cognitive flexibility and neuroplasticity. It is the input that distinguishes the active formulas (NEUROGENESIS, CORTEX, EMBODY, EUPHORIA) from a daily-use foundation like ADAPT, and it is the reason the active formulas are designed for protocol-style use over a defined arc rather than indefinite daily intake.

If you are new to this category, the relevant context is microdosing protocol literature — rhythms like Stamets (4 ON / 3 OFF) and Fadiman (1 ON / 2 OFF) over 4–8 weeks. The Active Botanical is what makes a formula a protocol formula.

Growth — the structural mushroom input

Once the signal is in place, the formula needs an input that supports the structural work the signal is asking the body to do. This is where the hero mushrooms most people associate with the brand live: Lion's Mane in NEUROGENESIS (studied for NGF-related signaling and neural support), Cordyceps in CORTEX (energy and endurance under load), Chaga and Turkey Tail in EMBODY (immune and gut intelligence), Reishi 12:1 in EUPHORIA (the calm-anchored warmer signature).

Which mushroom holds the growth role depends on which pathway the formula is built for. The species is not the point. The role is the point.

Fuel — the energy and metabolism layer

Cognitive and structural work is metabolically expensive. The brain consumes roughly a fifth of the body's energy while making up two percent of its weight; under stress, the energy economy draws down faster than under baseline conditions. A formula that supports signal and growth but ignores fuel is building from the second story up.

In NEUROGENESIS, the fuel role is held by Cordyceps militaris at 150 mg, studied for its relationship to oxygen utilization, ATP-related pathways, and exercise tolerance. In CORTEX, Cordyceps moves to a higher dose (200 mg) because the entire formula is built around steady energy under cognitive load. In EMBODY and EUPHORIA, fuel is carried by the mushroom subset chosen for each pathway.

The fuel layer is not stimulation. It is metabolic support. The difference matters.

Delivery — Shilajit, the mineral foundation

The least photographed and most quietly important role. Delivery is the layer that makes the other three roles land. Without it, the signal flows into an under-resourced system, the growth-supportive mushroom compounds are inefficiently used, and the fuel layer is partly wasted.

Every MYKO formula carries Shilajit at 60% fulvic acid as the delivery layer. Fulvic acid has a documented relationship to nutrient transport and cellular delivery; the trace-mineral content provides a baseline foundation the rest of the formula can rest on. This is the only ingredient that appears in all five formulas, and it is the brand's mineral signature.

The longer version is in Shilajit: The Delivery Layer in Every MYKO Formula.

How the system breaks down across the five formulas

Read the four roles laid out across the line and the architecture becomes legible at a glance:

NEUROGENESIS — Active Botanical (signal) + Lion's Mane 7:1 (growth, NGF-related) + Cordyceps militaris 8:1 (fuel) + Shilajit (delivery). Protocol formula for cognitive-pathway support.

CORTEX — Active Botanical (signal) + Cordyceps 8:1 at 200mg (fuel-led, steady energy under load) + Reishi 10:1 (growth, calm-anchor) + Shilajit (delivery). Stress-pathway protocol formula.

EMBODY — Active Botanical (signal) + Chaga + Reishi + Turkey Tail (growth + immune intelligence layer) + Shilajit (delivery). Recovery and body-led restoration.

EUPHORIA — Rare-species Active Botanical (signal) + Reishi 12:1 + Chaga 9:1 (growth, warmer signature) + Shilajit (delivery). Premium tier protocol formula.

ADAPTno Active Botanical. The full five-mushroom complex (Lion's Mane + Reishi + Chaga + Cordyceps + Turkey Tail) + Shilajit at the line's highest dose. The daily foundation. Built for indefinite use.

ADAPT is the architecture working in foundation mode. The other four are the architecture working in protocol mode. The system is one design language used at two intensities.

What this design costs us, on purpose

A four-role architecture is harder to sell than a four-ingredient list. "Premium Lion's Mane, dual-extracted, mega-dosed" is a cleaner pitch than "a hero mushroom plus a fuel mushroom plus a mineral foundation plus a microdose signal layer, all of them disclosed and dosed for what they do in the circuit." We accepted that trade.

The pitch is quieter. The formula is more honest. The people who understand why all four roles matter tend to be exactly the customers who stay, which is what the brand is built around.

What this design also rules out

Equally important is what the architecture excludes by design.

Magnesium is not in any MYKO formula. Magnesium glycinate at dinner is a recommended companion-stack input on the back label of the active formulas, but it isn't inside the capsule. The architecture is four roles; magnesium isn't one of them.

Niacin (Vitamin B3) is not in any MYKO formula. Niacin is a recommended back-label companion as well, useful as a daily cofactor alongside the active formulas, but it isn't inside any capsule. Read the supplement facts panel; it will not be listed.

Caffeine and synthetic nootropics are not in any MYKO formula. They produce most of the felt effect in the products they're added to, and we wanted the felt effect to come from the architecture working, not from stimulation pretending to be the active layer.

Proprietary blends are not used anywhere in the line. Every active is dosed and disclosed individually. You can see what's inside; if a competitor's panel hides amounts, you should ask why.

How to read this when you read other Library pieces

This monograph is the framework other Library pieces reference. If you read about why NEUROGENESIS is structured the way it is, or how CORTEX targets the stress pathway specifically, or why Shilajit appears in every formula — the underlying logic is the same one this piece lays out.

The system is signal, growth, fuel, delivery. Active formulas at protocol cadence. ADAPT as the daily floor. The companion stack on the back label finishes the practice. Everything else is variation on that theme.

If you've made it this far, you understand the architecture better than most people in the cognitive supplement category, including most of its founders. That's the version of customer the Library was written for.
